Is your cattery registered?Yes, our cattery Vlinderdoll is registered in Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA). All our cats have pedigrees.
-
What's special about your cattery? Our breeding cats are carefully selected in terms of their appearance, character and fit in our breeding program. Our breeding cats are imported or picked up ourselves from foreign countries such as Poland, Italy, Hungary. They are from high quality bloodlines from catteries of reputation. We breed ragdolls to be sweet companions, and can serve as therapy cats for the clients of our care farm. Therefore, in addition to health, we put extra emphasis on the character and socialization of kittens.
-
How does your cattery look like?We have renovated a dedicated two floor apartment/cat palace for the cattery. This apartment is within our house on one side. It has warming, many windows for light and ventilation, medical level air purifier, robot cleaner and of course all kinds of cat furniture, including a big sofa both for us and for the cats to chill. Many people think that it’s best if you can put all cats together. In reality, however, it is impossible and also not good for the cats. For example, you want to prevent unwanted pregnancy and spraying. You cannot force two female cats in one room if they don't get along to avoid stress. You also need a separate room for a mother cat where she feels safe and is not disturbed by other cats when she nurses the kittens, and where the kittens are safe to roam until after their first vaccine. Therefore for those purposes, we created 2 rooms inside the cattery separated by gate to allow fresh air flow and interaction. We also make sure that our cats have private time with us individually.
-
How do you socialize your kittens? Most of kittens' character are from their parents. It is interesting to see some kittens are more like their father, while others are more like their mother, both in appearance and character. Our breeding cats are carefully selected to have very good character and sweet temperament. You will also see the kittens' parents when you visit. The rest of character indeed is affected by environment and interaction. The kittens live in our house in a clean and loving environment, with a variety of facilities to fulfil their natural instincts. We make sure that they receive a lot of attention, hug and play interaction. They are used to be held by us from very young, they are used to comb, trim nails and all kinds of noises and traffic in the house. In addition, it is our vision that our cats/kittens are raised and socialized under the loving care (comb, trim nails, feeding, play, etc.) of our care farm clients.
-
What kind cat owners are we looking for?To adopt one of our kittens/cats, you must be over 18 years old, have a stable residence, and be a mature and responsible adult. You must be able to provide a health, clean and loving environment for the kitten. You must be able to afford to see a vet when the kitten is sick (It could happen to any living beings). Because of their very trusting and non-aggressive nature, ragdolls should be indoor cats only. As extreme human cats, they should have sufficient time with you and cannot be left alone for long.

Boy or girl to adopt? The main different between a male kitten and a female kitten is the size. In the same litter, a boy tends to be bigger than a girl. The personality is individual and doesn't depend on the gender according to research. The most important factors for determining a sweet personality in kittens are their parents and the socialization from an early age. Both genders can have territorial behaviors such as urinating. But you won’t experience any of it if the cats are castrated/spayed before 7-8 months old.

What are the adoption procedures? The adoption procedures include briefly 5 steps: Step 1: Join our waiting list by contacting us and submit your adoption application. Why do you allow reservation before visiting? We understand ideally you would like to see a kitten before reserving him/her. It used to be a dilemma for us too. As a cattery owner, we have clients with different conditions and preferences. Most of our pet owners did a lot of research on catteries already before contacting, and read our website carefully. So when we tell them a kitten is available, they would like to reserve them immediately. Some pet owners from abroad live quite far away and cannot make visit and still would like to reserve the kitten. We should give those who trust us and like the kittens so much the opportunities to reserve. Often there are a lot of people who are interested in our kittens. Mostly we schedule the visit in the weekend as we all have a busy life. It becomes unmanageable to schedule so many people to visit weekend after weekend. Also it becomes arguable who has priority to reserve a kitten if both people are interested, the person who visits first or the person who says he/she wants the kitten first. To avoid disappointment for both of them and us cattery owner, we decide that the reservation is based on deposit. PS: We also reserved our breeding cats from abroad without visiting but based on a lot of research on the cattery and breeder. We think this is a more efficient and less disappointing way for our cattery. To compensate the drawback of this approach, we have the kitten adoption application form that people need to fill so that we can know them better and see if they are sincere and will take good care of our cats. PS. Please do not reserve a kitten with us if you have doubts about this approach.

At what age can the kittens go to their new home?Kittens can go to their new home from around 3-5 months old depending on your preference on the sterilization/castration. See the answer to this question ("Will the kittens be spayed/castrated/neutered when they go to new home?") for details. By then they are fully vaccinated, regularly dewormed, microchiped, several times health checked and have passport.
-
Will the kittens be spayed/castrated/neutered when they go to new home?Early castration (around 3 month old) is common in the US, but people in the Netherlands are more comfortable with spay/castration when kittens are around 6 month old. Our vets also prefer at least 5 month old unless there is a reason to do it earlier. Our vets agrees to spay/castrate kittens earliest 4 month old. Given this context, we offer two options to buyers because we understand people have different preferences. Option 1: Kittens can go to new home from around 3 month old without spaying/castration. You can pick up the kitten and start to bond with each other earlier than option 2. However, we ask 500 euros of spay/castration guarantee, which will be returned later upon receiving proof that the kitten is spayed/castrated. We don't cover later spay/castration fee. Option 2: Kittens can go to new home from around 4.5-5.5 month old already spayed/castrated. The spay/castration fee is included in the purchase price. Personally I recommend option 1 because it's best for a kitten's socialization. Kitten's socialization period is from 2 weeks old to 16 weeks old (~4 months old). During this period, a kitten is very curious, open-minded and easy to accept new things and experience. Of course we do our best in terms of kittens' socialization with people, objects, noise, other cats and animals. So rest assured that even you choose option 2, you will get a very well socialized kitten.

What kind of documents will I receive? You will receive immediately the kitten's passport when you pick up the kitten. We will sign a contract, which I will send to you in advance before the pick up date. I will also send you a kitten care advice booklet. After the kitten goes to the new home. I will order the kitten's owner certificate, for which I will need your name, address, phone number and email. After receiving the owner certificate, I will order and send you the kitten's pedigree.

What are ragdolls like?Physically, Ragdolls are large, muscular, heavy boned, well balanced, (semi-)longhaired cats with blue eyes. Character-wise, they are affectionate, laid back, meek, calm, and extremely human cats, so called “dog in the shape of a cat”. More about ragdoll breed Ragdolls are large, muscular, heavy boned, well balanced, (semi-)longhaired cats with blue eyes. They can weigh 6-8kg for males and 5-7.5kg for females. Their legs are in proportion to the body. Paws are large and round. The tail is similar length as the body, thicker at the based and tapers at the tip. Their coat color stabilize until around 2 years of age and body doesn’t reach full maturity until 3-4 years of age. Ragdoll’s head is broad and a wedge shape with well-developed cheeks and a strong chin. Their ears are medium size, broad at the based and round at the tip. Eyes are oval shape with an amazing blue color. Ragdoll has soft silky coat and doesn’t have or have sparse undercoat. The first Ragdolls were developed and bred in California in the early 1960s by Ann Baker. She bred a pure white longhaired Angora Persian cat queen, Josephine, to a seal mitted male named Daddy Warbucks and a solid black male named Blackie. According to Baker, Josephine’s genes were altered at a nearby medical center where she was taken care of after being hit by a car. She miraculously survived the car accident, which turned her immune to pain, resulting in her floppy and relaxed character. Litters born after recovery had the limp, loving personalities ragdolls are known for. Ragdolls are affectionate, laid back, meek, calm cats, so called “dog in the shape of a cat”. Extremely human cats, they adore their owners, greet you at the door, follow you from room to room, roll over in front of you, let you pet their belly, scrub against your legs, come to you when called, “talk” to you a lot, purr happily in your arms, and prefer to stay where you are, be it the living room, kitchen, home office (they even follow you to the toilet). As sweet relaxed and curious cats, they would come to first time home visitors, sniff your hands, allow to be petted and hugged. They love children and get along with dogs.

What are the ragdoll colors and patterns?Ragdolls are all pointed cats. Kittens are all white when born. Their face, ears, legs and tail get darken later on. The ragdoll comes in a range of colors. Popular ragdoll colors include seal, blue, red (flame), cream, chocolate and lilac. There are 4 ragdoll patterns depending on the amount of white patches: Pointed (dark face, ears, legs, feet and tail), Mitted (white mittens on the feet, white chin extending to the belly, some have a white star or blaze on the nose), Bicolor (dark face with a white inverted V shape, ears, dark patches on the back, and dark tail), and Van (dark ears and tail). On top of this, ragdolls can have lynx/tabby pattern in the darker area.
-
Can I let my Ragdoll cat go outside? We highly discourage allowing your Ragdoll outdoors. Going outside exposes your cat to many potential diseases and dangers. Ragdolls have been specifically bred to be extremely gentle-natured and loving. They do not have the normal survival instincts that other cats have, so they may not pick up on the potential dangers of the outside world. This leaves them very vulnerable to injury, and even death, when left outdoors. Ragdolls can only be outdoors within a closed catrun or being supervised closely. For your Ragdoll’s health and safety, we highly recommend keeping them inside where they will be just as happy cuddled up with you on the couch!
-
What should we prepare to welcome our kitten?Essential things to start with are food (dry, wet), food bowl, water bowl/fountain, litter box, litter, litter scoop, scratching post, pet carrier and toys. Other things I recommend to have include cat tree, pet hair remover and air purifier. A complete list of supplies can be found here. You can find the supplies on a pet store or order online from Zooplus.
-
Do ragdolls shed?Ragdolls are famous for their soft, (semi) long hair and beautiful coat. They are gorgeous in winter with fluffy coat and the cute "scarf" around the neck. They shed in spring/summer when the weather gets warmer. But due to the lack of undercoat, they do tend to shed less than other cat breeds.
